SmartGrid is a form of electric generation, transmission and distribution network that uses two-way digital communication to control appliances at the consumer’s home thereby saving energy, reducing costs and increasing reliability of the electric grid. One of the critical practices of the SmartGrid is managing the dynamic demand of the customer’s consumption in response to the supply conditions called Demand Response (DR).

Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in electric vehicle that operates on a lithium-ion battery pack that can charge in both 240V and 110V, thereby behaving as another appliance at home. With demands for electric vehicles rising, OnStar has leveraged its capability to communicate to the vehicle to integrate electric vehicles (EV) with the Grid.
